Eggshell planters for spring

We eat a lot of boiled eggs in Germany...it's a German thing. I've been saving the shells for various Easter-related ideas, but decided to use some of them to get ahead on some summer planting for our balcony. I picked up the ceramic egg crate from Depot, used a toothpick to punch a drainage hole in the bottom of each shell, and filled them with potting soil and seeds (funnily enough, it was Martha's 'daily craft' recently).

My hope is that I will see some green sprouting up in time for them to help decorate my Easter table...we shall see! At the very least I'll eventually have some seedlings that will easily transfer to our balcony when it's warmer. Egg shells are supposed to be good for your soil, and since I can just crush the shell a little to plant them, it couldn't be easier!

It's been a long time since I've tried growing seedlings to transfer. Have you ever tried it? What are you growing?

Oh, wow, what an excellent idea, a must-try! (Hmm... I think I'll pop by the nearest Supermarkt right away...) :-D

Oh wow, I love it!!!! The ceramic egg carton and your idea. Must copy!
We hardly eat any boiled eggs (except around Easter with Gruene Sosse). I like them, but my husband doesn't really care for them. We do an all out American breakfast every Sunday though. :)

What constantly amazes me here in Germany is that they are selling those painted eggs everywhere, even in Bio-stores (saw them in Alnatura last night), which look so weird and chemical... almost poisonous. Is it to make egg-eating more attractive to children or sth? ;-)

yeah, those bright eggs at the grocery stores have always weirded me out -yuck. Sometimes I see them baked into bread things at the bakery and it just further grosses me out. I think if they went with softer colors and/or a less lacquered look I might be enticed to purchase some for decorating, but eating? um, no thanks! =P

I just stick with the Bio brown eggs =)
