Summer Road Trip Dreams: Italy

I mean really, this week is nuts. The weather is so hot and there's no time to cool down. I'm so thankful that I have a vacation to look forward to! This year we're hopping in the car and heading south. After visiting relatives in Bavaria, we'll continue on and explore northern Italy. I've never been to Italy before and have been dying to go. My husband's been on multiple occasions and says the key is knowing how to order coffee and gelato; thankfully he can do this just fine in Italian.

I'm still gathering ideas, but based on our lodging, Verona, Lake Garda, Venice, and the Dolomites are on our agenda. Have you been to any of these? Any recommendations?

Welcome in Italy! I love Dolomites and I usually spend my summer holidays near Merano and Bolzano. There are such a wonderful things to do and see. Around Merano, 10 min by car, you have to visit Castel Tirolo (Tirolo Castel), it's amazing! You could taste the Forst Beer in Foresta/Forst, in which you also visit the Forst brewery and have lunch or dinner in it (you have to taste canederli, speck and the stinco di maiale) - www.forst.it. Merano is famous for the Thermal Baths (www.termemerano.it)a, you can relax in its park, there are some swimming pools open air. Bolzano and Merano are not so big cities (1 day it could be enough...) you can walk in their historical centers or ride by bike, have a piece of cake (so good!) or visit some museums (in Bolzano there is Otzi Museum, for example - www.iceman.it). Even if Merano and Bolzano are in a mountain area, summer is very very hot so... ;) There are a lot of place to visit even if you like walking on mountains too... Ask me more info or email me (my contacts are on the blog) if you need it, it's a pleasure :)

My son is in Germany right now and is loving the great weather. He and his buddy spent 7 hours at the swimmbad today. You are going to love Italy. What is not to like!

Who doesn't love Venice (aka - we loved it!) We heard it could be smelly/too hot/too full in summer but didn't find it as bad as reported when we went a few Augusts ago. And it can be really chill if take a boat out to the other islands.

Enjoy & can't wait to hear all about your trip!
