On Hamburg: Must go back

I'll start covering our Great Scandinavian Road Trip...in chunks. The first is Hamburg, Germany. We had only a short bit of time here as it was really a pit stop of sorts on our way up to Denmark, however, it was totally worth it and we want to go back! I think all the brick, ocean, trade, industry, sharp humor, understated fashion, etc. reminded me so much of Boston (were I lived for 10+ yrs before moving to Germany) that it creates a fondness for Hamburg.

Hamburg Z words2

While we enjoyed our Hafenrundfahrt (harbor tour) and walking around town, I think the real highlight of our trip was meeting up and spending time with Allison of Stillwater Designs and her blog, Campbell Soup Diary. She's another American married to a German and the four of us (and her supercute baby boy) had a grand time together! Honestly, so much fun I forgot to take pictures. Sigh. Oh well, we'll just have to do it again sometime!

After such a lovely visit with Allison, she packed us a lovely picnic lunch and sent us on our way...to the ferry to Denmark! More to come...

We like the idea of Hamburg so much, we're holding our annual meetup there next week. Ready for another visit so soon? You're most welcome.

Thanks Cliff! Sadly recess doesn't let out for a while on our schedule, but I'll keep tabs on future gatherings!

Yeah! You're back. I love the name Hafenrundfahrt and back in the day I would have laughed at it, but I'm all too wise now. :) A blogger meet up? how fun!

It's SUCH A RIOT how people always regard northern Germany as a "pit stop". It's so degrading! But we have this expression in Hannover, "Don't tell them how much we love living in Hannover." Reason being, is that if it becomes trendy and hip here the prices go up and then it's no longer just the "ugly pit stop" to those who don't know any better. Hamburg has this reputation to, as being a pit stop on the way to Denmark. But it's not. I love Hamburg, I live really close by 1 hour 15 minutes by train, and 1 hour by car so it's the same distance between NH and Boston where I was before. I like going there because it is SO MUCH like Boston! It's how I feel about London too. London and Hamburg are the two cities that I escape to when I feel like I need my Boston fix. I go to Amsterdam for my little "NYC" fix because there are so many Americans there and parts of it feel very New York to me. Berlin is where I go when I want to feel like I'm in hardcore Germany, with that gritty excitement, the culture, the art, that amazing energy and vibe. But give northern Germany a chance, just don't move here. That's what the locals will tell you. We don't want people to know how great it is. :) xo

aww.. I miss Hamburg so much. I went to Germany for a semester abroad and met up with an old friend of mind from high school (he's a Germany and proud Hamburger). Long story short wir sind jetzt ein Paar, lol! So it's a super long distance relationship, bein's I live in New Jersey :P But I finish college this semester and I'm hoping to join him in Deutschland. Do tell, is it hard for Americans to move there??

I will most def keep up with your blog... it brings me back to the man/land I love!!
